The lie, its work well done, shall rot, Truth is strong and will prevail, When none shall care if it prevail or not.
During the Great War, when the South and all other parts of our country were straining every nerve to defeat a common foe, strange and unbelievable as it may seem at such a time of crisis, there was a most remarkable flood of misrepresentation, false analogy, and distorted historical statements con cerning our American history as it particularly relates to the Southern people. Ignorance, as well as deliberate distortion of facts, contributed to this unfortunate and ill-timed display.

The Gray Book Classic Reprint Sons of Confederate Veterans 9781331021339 Books
This book is refreshingly honest about the real causes of the War Between the States and the attitudes held between modern north and west and the south. It almost 100 years old but it's truths are as relevant today as they were then. The reader will by the very essence of logic be enlightened on real history. Apparently the educated north of 1920 was as propagandized to the point of stupidity as Americans are today. The author puts forth insulting editorial comments made during WW I comparing the C.S.A. to Imperial Germany which is and was ludicrous-a point the makes clear.There are only only two things I disliked. First the scanning was terrible being acceptable. The second thing I found distasteful and it is that the hatred of the north and west toward the south today has not changed one bit. In fact the ravaging by the Germans of Belgium (1914-1918) was identical to the north ravaging of the Confederacy. But that is not taught then or today.
This book should be mandatory reading as a clarion call to both the U.S. And it's southern states to wake up and see how our constitution has been turned upside down and twisted. Issues have been muddied to the extent that they are myths turned into bizarre and incomprehensible facts.
The author writes with a grasp of historical facts and politicalsavi. He expresses concerns we see unfolding even to this day. What is old is new again it would seem.
The rating for this book is based on the writer's knowledge of then contemporary evens in regard to our national misunderstanding of his time. A misunderstanding which persists today. Nonetheless this is a must read for the truly educated or those seeking real education.

The Gray Book Classic Reprint Sons of Confederate Veterans 9781331021339 Books Reviews
As a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans I was highly interested in seeing and reading this book. It predicts many of the anti Southern, politically correct movements which are going on now, and I am amazed at how accurately the 'old timers' predicted it. My Great Grandfather, his three brothers, and too many cousins to count were in the Confederate Army and suffered a great many hardships...and at times death.. in the fulfilment of their service. I think it is odd that the victors have corrupted history to the point that the South and Southerners a vilified. It's also quite interesting...I think...that the rest of the civilized world abolished the institute of slavery without firing a shot. Perhaps Ol' Abe pushed a little too hard at the wrong time. I can also assure anyone who is interested that my relatives WERE NOT fighting to keep the institution of slavery alive. They along with 95% if Southerners never saw let alone owned a slave. I digress. A great history lesson in this book.
This version of The Gray Book has been updated and corrected from the versions reviewed by most of the other people. I had the old one too. It was almost impossible to read because I was being distracted from the meaning of the text by all of the errors. Now it is fixed and this is a much improved version.
I read this book because some time ago I became interested in the "Civil War" from the South's point of view. I had been indoctrinated into the North's version of events and couldn't understand why someone would take the viewpoint of the South. Yet even in the North's version of history I couldn't help noticing some glaring inconsistencies. I call the largest of these the, "Lincoln Paradox". If we assume that it is fundamentally wrong to hold someone against their will with the use of force, as in slavery, how is it then right to use force to hold a State in the Union against their will?
This book is a concise and powerful representation of the core ideas of the South's point of view. It is not by any standard a complete research on the subject and it was not intended to be. But it is one of the best starting points if one wished to learn the "other side" of the causes of the war than what is commonly taught in the public school system.
This is a book that EVERY American should read and be familiar with. The same sort of animosity exists today, where a few screaming radicals are causing a lot of Americans to question the meaning of the Civil War, but without actually investigating said war. No more monuments should be pulled down, no more names besmirched until a true investigation of the southern side of the Civil War be done.
It's a one of a kind book. Today, most folks presume that historical revisionism of the American Civil War began at the height of the civil rights movement of the 1960's, when actually the revisionism dates as far back as the War itself. A good number of Confederate veterans were still alive in 1920, and were appalled at the continuing misinformation. The War's story line was that the South had slaves, wouldn't end the institution, and it took Honest Abe and the Union Army to finally set them free. In the recent movie "Gettysburg" the actor playing Lawrence Chamberlain peps the 20th Maine by telling them they were fighting to "set other men free" (had the real Colonel Chamberlain made such a remark, he'd have been courts-martial-ed after his men deserted). The revisionist history never mentions that four slave states stayed (and fought) with the Union, or that the largest slave market in the country was the Union capital, Washington D.C., or that the Union Army continually had to re-assure it's soldiers that they were NOT involved in an anti-slavery war, or that the Emancipation Proclamation didn't free a single slave, or, or, or. As actual participants in that War, the old men wanted to have a final say about the victor's history painting them as slave-drivers. And, so they did, and here it is. The War was about the greed of the industrialized North for Southern agriculture goods, and the drain on the supply created by European demand. Add Northern control of Congress and 50% export tariffs, and you have secession. The old Vet's words didn't affect history's re-writing, but the old men did l have their say. I respect only history written by the actual participants, and care nothing for the ramblings of authors born a half-century after the even they write about;
