In 2004, Harrison J. Pemberton embarked on a journey to teach Western philosophy to a group of young Buddhist monks in India. One monk in particular was poised to study His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje. Together these scholars generated a dialogue of teaching and learning, looking at the work of Western philosophers and comparing it to Buddhist philosophy, questioning how the Buddha and Socrates might meet. The Buddha Meets Socrates is a philosopher's journal chronicling this process of inquiry and exchange.

This is the most important book ever written and should be read by everyone. As a student at Washington & LeeI was fortunate to have been able to take a number of courses taught by the author, Dr. Harrison Pemberton.
I always wondered whether he would write a book, as Socrates, (the focus of several courses), never did, as he believed it would dull the
memory. Fortunately, Plato did not share this same commitment, and wrote the Platonic Dialogues. This book is almost
a functional equivalent of Plato's works, as Dr. Pemberton does not seek to provide answers. Rather, he raises questions as he discusses
the differences in East-West philosophies and how they have evolved over the years. He leaves it up to the reader to
ponder the issues and how they are viewed under different contemporary cultures. I am certainly glad Dr. Pemberton
decided to visit India and share his experiences with this wonderful book!
